Best of Both Worlds: Touring the Greek Isles

Greece is a gorgeous country to visit for a summer holiday and not short of amazing destinations: with a vast number of idyllic coastal islands (estimates of their number varies but are generally agreed to be between 1,200 and 6,000) you’re sure to find the perfect spot for a relaxing break. You might be tempted to opt for visiting one of the smaller Greek islands, but although they are attractive and often quieter, it’s well worth giving some thought to the wonderful fusion of ancient and modern cultures that the larger islands can offer.

Cretecrete, geece

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and is famous for the ancient Minoans, who had an advanced civilisation as far back as 2600BC. The ruins of their tombs and palaces, especially the world renowned Knossos, draw huge crowds of visitors every year. Other significant sites include Phaestos, Malia and Zakros; however, Crete certainly has a modern side too. There are plenty of large, bustling resorts, particularly on the northern side of the island, offering all types of accommodation and amenities, but if you’re not a night reveller and prefer something a bit more understated, you won’t be disappointed. Towns like Agios Nikolaos have the perfect mix of sleepy and bustling, with lots of great tavernas and bars, plus it stands on the shores of beautiful Mirabelo Bay.

Corfu

The second largest Greek island, Corfu is no less steeped in history than Crete. It is an absolute feast of fortresses, castles, palaces and other archaeological sites. You can take in Byzantine architecture, such as the basilica at Paleopolis or Angelokastro Castle atop the highest peak on the shoreline, near Palaiokastritsa. And when you’ve had your fill of Corfu’s history, you can enjoy all the modern comforts of your resort, whether it’s cosmopolitan Corfu Town with its modern attitude, arty ambience and top restaurants, or somewhere a bit more sedate, like Agios Stephanos (East), which is similar to villages on smaller islands.

Lesvos

From a petrified forest in Sigri to one of the largest castles in Europe, located in Mytilini, Lesvos will keep you busy. Excavations show it has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Farmers still unearth Trojan helmets today when ploughing fields at Vatera, as it was an important army base. You can visit the remains of the ‘well of Achilles’ and the fortress of Paliopyrgo, built in 1355BC. Although full of history, the capital of Mytilini is a modern, commercial centre of the island and very busy. It has a great selection of museums and art galleries, as well as wonderful restaurants and shops. Some call it ‘little Athens’.

If you enjoy steeping yourself in history and ancient culture, then Crete, Corfu and Lesvos won’t disappoint. What makes them even more appealing is that their inhabitants are also very much in tune with the 21st century!
