It’s no secret that Colorado offers some of the best white water rafting in the country. Some of the most adventurous and frequented rapids can be found in the southern part of the state, not far west of Colorado Springs. Among the many popular rafting trips offered in this part of the Centennial state, Royal Gorge rafting just might be the most popular. This section of the Arkansas River offers an exhilarating rafting adventure that can be enjoyed by anyone who’s willing to take some risks and get a little wet (or possibly soaked) in the process.

The Arkansas River – A Staple of Colorado White Water Rafting

Scientists believe the Arkansas River started as a small stream millions of years ago, which continually wore away at the hard rock, giving the Royal Gorge its uniquely deep and narrow formation. The Arkansas River begins in central Colorado and extends through Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas, and is nearly 1,500 miles long, making it the sixth-longest river in the US.

Within the first 125 miles from its beginning, the river drops almost 5,000 feet, making it one of the most popular places to raft in the area. All of the Arkansas River’s water is sourced from the small town of Leadville, CO.

In the summer, tourists and rafting junkies come from all over the world to try their hand in Royal Gorge white water rafting. Although rapids and water levels will change throughout the summer months, Royal Gorge rafting on this stretch on the Arkansas River offers class III, IV, & V rapids, an exhilarating white water experience for anyone looking for a little adventure.

Royal Gorge white water rafting through this section of the Arkansas River is an experience you can never forget! Many early American explorers even referred to the Royal Gorge as the Grand Canyon of the Arkansas River.

The Royal Gorge Bridge – Activities for the Whole Family

One of the most visited attractions in Canon City is the Royal Gorge Bridge. Almost 1,000 feet above the Arkansas River, The Royal Gorge Bridge was once the highest bridge in the world. Although it no longer holds this title, it remains the highest bridge in the US today. Since its completion in 1929, the Royal Gorge Bridge has undergone numerous renovations and restorations to keep it up to date and safe for visitors traveling from all over. Looking for some extra activities to tag onto your rafting trip? There’s also a children’s playland, zip lines, a sky coaster, and even gondola rides available right in the Royal Gorge Park. Just minutes from Canon City and an hour from Colorado Springs, the Royal Gorge Bridge is the perfect stop to make during your Royal Gorge rafting trip.
